Bedroom Cleaning – Pillows

I wash my pillows but didn’t realise that I needed to wash my pillow three times a year! Today, I will wash my feather pillows along with my sheets and other bed coverings.

Yesterday, I tackled my shoe closet. I took out all the shoes that I can no longer wear because my broken toes will not accept being squished into a pointy dress shoe. It is sad to see these shoes go but they have been in my closet for two years and I’m not using them.  I’m using the space created by the discarded shoes to store all of the shoes stacked in front of my front door.

The challenge will now be to take shoes into my bedroom each evening. Maybe after a few months of following this cleaning schedule, I will be shining my shoes before putting them away… at least until I can have this man polishing my shoes for me.

Tuesday lets Handle it.

Today, I surface cleaned the bedrooms. Can your house be too clean? Maybe that is why I’m redecorating and throwing out things.  Today, I purchased handles for my kitchen cabinets and installed half of them. Here is a photo of my cabinets before changing the door pulls…

and here are the door pulls I purchased today at Ikea installed on the cabinets.

Snazzy. I’ve decided that the walls are too pink for my taste so I will be repainting them white and, once I replace/update the tiles, I will pick a new wall colour, maybe purple?  I will look at pinterest and create a board for kitchen wall colours. Have you checked out my pinterest boards?  i have lots of them.

Monday and We’re on the Clean

Where was I?  Here. This is me grinding dirt into oblivion following the 30 minutes a day schedule. Over the weekend, I stayed on track even when I went offline from writing. My cleaning on Sunday compelled me to start renovating my kitchen. Looking through Kitchen designs and Kitchen remodels on Pinterest I realised I needed to do something with the cabinets.

First, I shouldn’t have anything on top of my cabinets. I think the designer’s assumption is that you are putting decorations on top of your cabinets but I was using the tops of my cabinets as additional storage space for things with no permanent home… like land of broken toys. The top of my cabinets were for all those things I didn’t really need but felt like I shouldn’t throw away. On Sunday, I took everything off the tops of my cabinets and found a new home for those items inside of the cabinets or in the trash bin. It felt good to tackle this cleaning/sorting job so I decided to keep going.

I took off the trim on the cabinets, removed the door pulls, and painted the kitchen wall a shade of brown. Removing the trim and painting the walls took about 3 hours. Finding a new home for all the stuff on top of my cabinets took another 2 hours.   Today’s trip to the recycle center to drop off the trim and old light fixtures from underneath the cabinets took 35 minutes.

This was all in addition to my 30 minute daily clean.

Best time to take a photo of your kitchen is right after you go grocery shopping and in the middle of your attempt to take everything off the top of your cabinets. (my hair is now a shade of red, the flowers are in a vase, and the basil went into a turkey soup.
Paper towels still do not have a home but cabinet doors are super clean.. there is gunk under those door handles.  Yuck.

I will keep you posted with the kitchen remodel inspired by the cleaning schedule.  Be careful. Cleaning may inspire you to remodel your house too.

Day 3 – What’s Under the Bed?

I cleaned last night at 10:30pm.  I guess there’s no rule that says the 30 minute cleaning episode must happen at the same time everyday. For me, cleaning the bedroom when I’m in the bedroom makes the most sense but I’m only in the bedroom when I wake up in the morning or when I go to bed.

I leave my bedroom around 530am every morning to take my dogs for a walk and I don’t get back into the bedroom until around 2200. Last night, when I wandered downstairs into my bedroom, I swept the wood floor with my swiffer and then cleared off the marble window shelves.

Because I want to free up the energy in my house, I’ve been letting go of things I have not used in two years and I’ve been moving around furniture.  I’ve also decided that everything in my house must be stored in a cabinet or a box except for a few candle holders and books. I will no longer have anything out except in the kitchen where I have electronics on the countertops. This rule does not include my plants and a few choice accessories but does apply to everything else.

I am making this rule so that I stop accumulating clutter. If everything has a home, it is more likely to find its way back there instead of making its way on top of my printers or the kitchen table.  The challenge to this rule is my 13 year old daughter.

We will see how we do over the next couple of months.

The goal for today, Thursday, is to surface clean the office/guest room but I don’t have one of those. My office is at Frauenstrasse 18 and i’m on vacation so will not visit the office until Monday and will not wander down there just to surface clean all the art supplies I dropped off on Sunday.  I also do not have a guest room which is why I send visitors to a hotel.

Because I don’t have an office or a guest room,I decided to clean around my printers and clean off the desk in my bedroom because those two things seemed office related and were not touched on Saturdays 2.5 hour cleaning spree.

I’ve been cleaning for almost a week and I like the results.  If you would like to follow my cleaning schedule, you can find it here.  I will not be doing the four hour cleaning again. If you want to try it, I only achieved a 2.5 hours.  That is the time to beat.  (just cleaning is the big challenge. I can organise for 18 hours straight and still have things left to organise.)

I wrote a post today for metabolic balance based on some info Len sent me. The post is sales and marketing material but it does share some information from a study that promotes metabolic balance. I’ve talked about this study before.  It talks about how keeping your metabolism balance really raises your quality of life.   A good reason to be a metabolic balancer. I’m a balancer, he’s a balancer, she’s a balancer wouldn’t you like to be a balancer too? ( I do not drink Dr. Pepper or advocate drinking it. I just like this jingle.)

Cleaning Everyday for 30 Days

Did you read my post last week on metabolic balance about cleaning? If you didn’t, here is the schedule I will be following for the next 30 days.

Before starting the 30 day schedule, I thought I would see if I could clean for four hours straight.   This task was daunting for me.   I have many things I like to do for four hours but golfing and cleaning are not on the list.  Waking up on Saturday, I decided I would try this four hour schedule to make Monday’s work a bit easier.  Setting the timer on my iphone, I pulled up the directions and off I went, cleaning for 2.5 hours. I dusted, cleaned mirrors (I have two), dusted, wiped off all surfaces, dusted, vacuumed the floors, the ceilings

and my couch

I think the biggest accomplishment on Saturday was getting down on the floor of the bathroom with my steam cleaner and cleaning the tiles. I took the steam cleaner to the grout and blasted away dirt I didn’t know existed.   Now, thanks to my steam cleaner, my bathroom feels super clean but not clean enough.  Now, I want to dig out all the dated tiles and fixtures and remodel it ASAP. Clean is not enough for my ugly shades of gray bathroom.

Today is day 2 of the 30 day cleaning routine and I’m working on the bathroom again.  We deep cleaned it on Saturday so I would prefer to ignore it but it is on the schedule so I’m going to focus on figuring out how to store towels. I will let you know if I figure anything out.  The goal for yesterday (day 1)  was to vacuum the couch to get rid of dog hair and to clean off the counters of my kitchen.  I will post a photo of my couch for you tomorrow so you can see the challenge I face keeping it black in a world of fuzzy white.

If you are trying this cleaning schedule, let me know how it is working for you and how you change it to fit your lifestyle.
